CCPP with Valerie Lopez & Ellis Aych: Lesson #9 - Creating Your Own Show
October 30, 2024
Richard Goodwin
Valerie Lopez and Ellis Aych have teamed up to record a 10-part comedy class inspired by the hilarious Comedy Wham Presents episode with Ellis as guest.
Each episode is a rapid-fire 30 minutes and full of … nonsense covered in helpful pointers.
I wanna let you in on a little secret 🤐 ready ???
YOU. 👏🏾 CAN. 👏🏾 CREATE. 👏🏾 YOUR 👏🏾 OPPORTUNITIES. 👏🏾
That's right you little comedy slut, it's time you went for it and produced your onlyf....I mean...comedy show 😅
You can work with a club, you can work with a bar or coffee shop, or even a movie theater to create a new show. The small theaters in town often put out a call for new show pitches. Take your opportunity and run with it! Don't forget the logistics of creating the lineup, making flyers, promoting, coordinating equipment, and every little detail. Talk to other show runners to make sure you're thinking about all the logistics! Need a refresher on promoting your show? Revisit Episode Aych (8) of CCPP to learn all the ins and outs of promotion.
Maybe you have an idea for a cooking challenge comedy show where the audience votes on the best standup set performed while on stilts. You do you! Straightforward showcases can be great ways of creating stage time for working out sets, but maybe you want to create something a little unique. That's ok, too. There's examples all over Austin, New York, and Los Angeles (and probably parts in between) of creative show concepts. Maybe ease up on the stilts requirement, though. You want to make sure the performers and the audience are entertained, not injured in the process.
All the things you learned in Episode 7 about self-promotion? Now turn that into promotion for your new show! Also, be warned, the old lady learns what the cool kids are saying in this episode.
Most new shows aren't a success right out of the gate. That's ok! Keep refining and making it your passion project. You can also learn from others (mentors and friends are a great resource) on how to make things really pop. Some shows take years to hit it big! It took Jeremiah Watkins about 8 years before Standup on the Spot became the powerhouse show it is today. If you're passionate and produce a high-quality show, you'll be rewarded.
