The first time you meet Dulce Mac, she comes off as a shy, timid, person. But once you scratch the surface, you realize what a force she is, both on and off stage. A survivor of several traumatic experiences, including escaping a cult, Dulce (pronounced dul-SAY) shares her unexpected foray into comedy.

Landing in Austin

Dulce Mac's mom had a health scare that brought her entire family from Venezuela to Houston, Texas, turning the large city into her new family home at the formative age of 13. Luckily, the scare was a false alarm, but there was no going back for the family and "no going back" has sort of become a theme of Mac's life. After turning 18, she found herself in faraway places like Los Angeles, San Diego, and even Austin, but never for more than a year. It was in Los Angeles that she made an accidental purchase of a 40 ticket package at the Hollywood Improv. She watched a LOT of comedy, but she felt too scared to try her hand at it. Until she found her way back to Houston. She started working at the Houston Improv and regulars kept inviting her to perform and she finally did it. She doesn't remember much, but she remembers a few laughs and fellow comics were encouraging her to continue. Eventually, despite her progress in Houston, there were too many sad memories and Austin became home.

She [mom] is still kicking it.

Erasing Trauma

If you spend any time following Dulce's social media, you'll know she is a voice for those who've suffered trauma. In an investigative piece about a troubled teen program, Dulce advocates for teens like her who have been sent to these programs and isolated from their family and friends. The loss to suicide of friends she made while in the program clearly weighs on her and she advocates for people who suffer at the hands of institutions. Of her own traumas, she finds "full erasure" to be cathartic, if inconvenient. After the dissolution of her marriage, she deleted all photos and written memories of the union. A film photography class professor took mercy on Mac by letting her take photos at the zoo after she admitted burning the photos of her soon-to-be ex-husband that she had planned to submit.

I like erase my own memory. I’m sure part of that is a trauma response.

Her protective circle

Grace Kirk and Andrew Youngblood (owner of The Secret Group) took Dulce under their wing early on and others have been quick to form a protective circle. Dulce shares an experience of a comic who brought Dulce on stage in Dallas announcing "women aren't usually funny, but I guess this one is". David Lucas was part of the lineup and emphatically took the comic to task. By the next show, they properly introduced Dulce. And let's be clear, Dulce doesn't need protecting. If you've seen her on stage recently, you know she's willing to take down hecklers and she's a proficient roaster.

[Andrew] and Grace kind of, like helped me out, get on shows.

The return of Yeah Yeah Podcast

The unbreakable friendship of Grace Kirk and Dulce Mac began in a moment of schadenfreude as Mac was leaving film school In L.A. and Houston native Kirk was walking by on the street. Mac wrote a fellow friend about the random encounter and a Facebook friend request led to a roommate situation. Grace and Dulce's friendship and comedy adventures led them to the inevitable formation of a podcast. Named after Dulce's penchant for saying "yeah, yeah" to random things in their conversations, the podcast launched while the duo still lived in Houston. Once in Austin, they settled into recording at The Creek and the Cave until a recent hiatus. Dulce announced that the return of the podcast was coming on March 12! Yeah-yeah-ites rejoice as the the social media detective show returns! They're also collaborating on a new show called Shameless. Coming to a stage near you!

She (Grace) was telling me this like, insane story on the phone. And I just went, Yeah, yeah.
