We haven’t recorded a new episode since Moontower, which means our podcast has been on a summer vacation longer than most European countries give their citizens. But I couldn’t be happier that our first guest back from this extended hibernation is Anthony Pappaly. Sure, he absolutely crushes at live comedy shows, but his viral videos are the real crystal ball showing us there’s something seriously promising in Anthony’s future.

Growing up in Northern California

Despite living in a beach paradise where most people's biggest decision is SPF 30 versus 50, Anthony had his heart set on joining the military after graduation. His dad had other plans, launching a full-scale propaganda campaign until Anthony finally agreed to film school first. As it turns out, the combination of military discipline and film school perfectionism creates the kind of polished content that doesn't just go viral—it takes over your entire feed.

I really wanted to join the military when I was in high school, really. And my dad convinced me not to join right out of high school. I studied film, and then I still ended up joining later.

Accepting His One True Love

Yes, of course we mean his wife. But also, we mean comedy. While serving in diverse locations like Hawaii, Bahrain, and Florida, Anthony hit the mic at every opportunity, discovering that comedy scenes everywhere were surprisingly welcoming—even to a guy whose day job involved following orders instead of getting laughs. When fighter pilot training came calling, Anthony was convinced he'd found his Top Gun moment. But during a drive home from a Florida comedy show, he called his wife with a revelation: he was ready to fully commit to serve his country as a standup comic.

About those Viral Videos

Anthony and longtime friend Nik Oka recently reunited when Nik joined Austin's booming comedy scene. Their shared sense of humor made collaborating on sketch videos a natural fit—and the results speak for themselves, with some videos racking up close to 500K views. The sketches are genuinely fun to watch, combining smart comedy with the kind of polished production value that makes Anthony's film school dad very proud he won that propaganda campaign.

I think we have, like, a formula here that works with us, and we like to do it.
