This episode was a whirlwind of laughs and improv wisdom as Alex Walker shared her journey from Atlanta (and not England as I quickly learned) to becoming one of Austin’s comedic best performers. Whether she’s leading a wild scene, inventing a new character, or just cracking up her friends, Alex brings an unstoppable energy (and plenty of absurdity) to everything she does. Tune in and get ready to smile — because life with Alex onstage is anything but ordinary — it’s pleasantly absurd!

Jumping In, Laughing Loudly

Alex Walker's story begins in Woodstock, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. She didn’t see herself having any fun in her day job. But improv grabbed her attention—and signing up for that first class at Dad’s Garage was a total game-changer.

When she heard about Austin's comedy scene and beautiful natural spaces, she made the leap. She signed up for improv classes at Hideout Theater and instantly felt like she belonged. Just as importantly, she realized her favorite part of performing. As Alex put it, “I love making people laugh.” And she's made a lot of people laugh since her move to Austin in 2014. In 2025 alone, she's made people laugh all across the world (more on that later).

I just signed up for a class, and haven’t stopped since then

Finding Her People and Her Groove

Improv in Austin wasn’t just about jokes for Alex—it was about finding her crew and building her own style. She joined troupes, took loads of classes, and learned to let go of fear and embarrassment by playing pretend and seeing what happened.

She’s all about bringing the absurd while also fully supporting her teammates, which is why her troupes, especially Fuck This Week (which is the troupe she's been with the longest) mean so much to her. Alex is fearless and totally herself when she hits the stage. She's the first one to explore the absurd and she particularly relishes the physicality of it all. Her troupes know she loves being carried around on stage, which is quite the bold choice. The support works both directions which creates room to explore even more absurdity.

She's constantly finding new directions to explore. Lately, she’s gotten the itch to dive into clowning, inspired by what she saw at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the growing clowning scene in Austin. She loves that performer’s rush and the chance to keep growing. “Just to be, like, single threaded, that never happens," she admits. She was excited to focus on something fully (we're getting to it, don't worry).

Nothing can hurt me or embarrass me anymore.

From Wild Characters to Fringe Stages

Alex loves improvising weird characters on stage, so it’s no surprise she dreamed up Come. See. Saw—a twisty, funny show concept born out of the Saw movie series, exploring Billy the Doll. Alex took the improv staple notion of "if this is true, what else is true" and applied it to Billy. Rather than focusing on the franchise's premise of death and horror, Come. See. Saw. was a tale of Billy wanting to rejoin society as a good person (and avid cyclist)—and she took it all the way to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Accustomed to performing in multiple improv troupes at home, Alex suddenly found herself performing solo for totally new (and international) audiences, learning fast what landed with them. It was nerve-wracking but thrilling. “I had no one else to help me out… but we got there,” she remembered. Every new challenge made her more inventive, and she's obsessed with returning to Scotland with new material and new opportunities to learn. If we're lucky, we might even see the spark of future shows born at one of her improv performances.

I had to learn how to… really win over an audience
